Glen Devlin Vineyard

via Waikerie – Riverland – Lower Murray Zone – South Australia

Rob and Terry Byrne at the
Glen Devlin Vineyards, Riverland region, SA.

Nestled on the picturesque River Murray the vineyard at Devlins Pound is situated on the Goyder Highway half way between Morgan and Renmark. Named Glen Devlin Vineyard after Paddy Devlin who ran a wine shanty called Devlin's Shack, peddling grog to weary cattlemen. Sick of eating fish all the time, Paddy's fancy turned to beef. Soon Devlin was taking several head of cattle a day. This thieving ended abruptly the day Devlin disappeared. A shallow grave revealed a skull with a bullet hole and remnants of Devlin's distinctive red beard. Soon tales were told of Devlin's Ghost seen riding along the old cliff top.

The Riverland area is Australia's largest irrigation region and this area has grown to encompass many varied primary producing properties, wine and table grapes and now represents over 35% of the total Australian grape production.

This 300 hectare property at Devlins Pound first vines were planted in the early 1970's. It now has over 85 hectares of vineyards, namely Shiraz, Cabernet and Chardonnay with the best fruit kept for our own Lifestyle selection label wines and the balance along with White Frontignac, Colombard, Gordo, Ruby Cabernet, Tokay and Chenin Blanc sold to various wineries in the area.

The seasonal conditions see long, hot dry days and temperate cool nights, combined with carefully controlled irrigation and the rich alluvial soils of the region give high yields of quality fruits.

This property is the first property the family owned with Rob and Terry growing up here with their Father and Mother, Terry now continues the family tradition of still living on the property with his wife Elise.
